A language should be able to express anything.

Yet in Taiwan, Hakka is often seen as a language in decline—spoken mostly by the elderly and limited to specific regions. But these labels don't define its potential. To shift perceptions and elevate the status of the Hakka language, the Hakka Affairs Council chose to spotlight its possibilities each year on Mother Tongue Day (December 28).

For this year's campaign, we took on another label—“Taiwanese Girl” (台女)—a term often burdened with unfair stereotypes about Taiwanese women. By using Hakka to reframe this stigmatized phrase, we delivered a bold message: in a world increasingly defined by labels, women have every right to express themselves confidently and unapologetically.

The resulting video resonated powerfully with younger audiences, who not only connected with the message but also recognized the Hakka Affairs Council's bold step beyond its usual comfort zone. Through this campaign, a new generation heard Hakka spoken in a fresh, empowered voice—and saw that this language, too, belongs in the conversations of today.
